Abstract

In October 2002, a Hellfire missile launched from a Predator impacted the vehicle that transported one of those responsible for the attacks against the USS Cole two years ago. This event started a new anti-terrorist strategy based on drone attacks. A total of 563 attacks were executed during Obama's two terms, this number being 10 times higher than the attacks carried out by his predecessor, George W. Bush. This work seeks to problematize what was the impact of drones on military doctrine and the effects it had on the anti-terrorist strategy during the Obama administration (2009- 2017). For this, the re/evolution of unmanned aircraft throughout history, the positive and negative aspects, and the operations carried out by the CIA and the Armed Forces of the United States will be analyzed, looking to elucidate whether the progressive use of drones is justified by its effectiveness in meeting targets and dealing with irregular enemies.
