Abstract

This article presents the meanings that junior high school students in Mexico construct of school based on the experiences of their teachers' teaching practices. The methodological theoretical approach that guides the study is Schütz’s theory of subjectivity, as well as the contributions of Bourdieu and Passeron on school
conceptualization. It is an interpretative research, interviews were conducted with eight students who dropped out of secondary school and subsequently returned to complete it. Among the findings is the set of meanings that lead young people to decide to drop out of school. The article is divided into four sections, the first exposing notes on the notion of youth and school and the construction of meanings; the second presenting the methodology; the third the results; Finally, a series of reflections are presented in order to achieve a better understanding of the characteristics of youth.
