An approach to Buenos Aires public space policies with a gender perspective

Public space deal with men, women and dissidents differently, not only because of the difference in sexed bodies, but also to the different uses associated to the roles assigned to them. Depending on their configuration, public spaces can restrict or enable activities, freedoms and movements. Due to the various modes of appropriation and representation, the daily tensions of urban life are materialized in public space.Using the Puerto Madero neighborhood of Buenos Aires as an empirical reference, this work aims to reflect on the management of public spaces. Based on a qualitative approach, supported by the analysis of secondary sources and the conceptual discussion of public space, inequality and spatial justice, this paper analyzes some of the management policies of Buenos Aires’public space de a gender perspective.
