the culture on the integration process

Abstract

For decades, the role of culture has been reevaluated as a determining factor in the development of countries, due to the economic value it represents and its role as a bridge of communication between nations, which facilitate mutual knowledge and cooperation. In Latin America, countries share similarities based on the history of the struggle for Independence. However, relations between them have been insufficient to achieve integration. Rivalries and interests have repeatedly blocked attempts at regional integration. Culture is a key factor in banishing these differences, allowing the union of groups that identify with values and identities that contribute to creating from language, religion, history and related traditions. MERCOSUR drags economic problems, political asymmetries, differences in thematic approaches and in the implementation of policies among its States Parties. In general, economic integration is conceived as the basis of everything else in a society, leaving aside culture and forgetting that, without their contribution, many processes of economic integration have not been without identity. This article addresses the importance of the cultural sphere in MERCOSUR. The origin and evolution of the cultural area will be discussed, especially the Meetings of Ministers of Culture of the member countries. In addition, the issue of Intangible Cultural Heritage raised by UNESCO and that MERCOSUR contributes to preserve is contemplated.
